Getting Around izmir

Izmir has a well developed transportation network with national and international highways, railways, and airways and maritime lines.

Public transport is operated by the Municipality and its red buses that can be taken from anywhere; simply show up at the bus station (“otogar”) and announce your destination to the driver. The fares are low but if long stays it is recommended to get a “Kent Kart” (City card); it is more reasonable than direct pays. Kent Karts are available in the bus ticket offices or at some shops.

There are available boat/ferry services provided by the Municipality. The passenger boats cover the routes of: Konak-Karsiyaka-Konak, Konak-Bostanli-Konak, Konak-Bayrakli-Konak, Goztepe-Karsiyaka-Goztepe and the ferry boats, for cars and passengers, Uckuyular-Bostanli-Uckuyular.

Metro System around the city covers the principal districts and suburbs, with approximately 11 km. long and with 10 stations. The end stations are Bornova and Uckuyular. The Municipality of Izmir is extending the metro system; after the construction of the new railways and the rehabilitation of the existing ones, it will be a superb development in the public transport system of Izmir.

Dolmus or minibus services are available usually outside the very central parts of Izmir, as well as taxis that are quite reasonable and easily recognizable by their yellow color and lighted “taxi” signs on top. The rates vary depending the time, after midnight (24:00) till morning (06:00) it will cost 50% more than the daytime fare.
